Salty Dogs

Two possible interpretations:

1) Author is speaking directly to the year 2012 which is, as they observe, quite salty, dog.

2) Author is cursing someone called Salty Dog in the year 2012.

Regardless of the actual meaning, said author is surprised about this turn of events.
